Book Beginnings on Friday: March 2, 2012

Hey everyone! I'm looking for someone to take over Book Beginnings. My zest for blogging has kind of tapered off, and this blog has become pretty quiet over the last few weeks. So if you're interested in becoming the new host for Book Beginnings on Friday, please send an email to afewmorepages[at]gmail[dot]com (include the URL of your blog). Thanks!

How to participate: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments. Include the title and the author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you would like, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line, and let us know if you liked or did not like the sentence. The link-up will be at A Few More Pages every Friday and will be open for the entire week.

Thanks to Becky at Page Turners for starting this meme and to Rose City Reader for inspiring it!

This week I'm reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Here are the first lines:
I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have an XBox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds.
This is certainly an intriguing beginning. Just from the blurb I know this book is about a boy with a facial deformity, and finding out that it starts out being told from his perspective definitely makes me want to read more.

So how does your current read begin, and what are your thoughts so far? Please leave the link to your specific post, not just to the front page of your blog.

  2. Hi Katy,

Those first few lines make compelling reading, although at first glance I assumed that it was a memoir and my interest lapsed somewhat. When I checked out the synopsis and realised that it is in fact a novel, I am now definitely interested in reading it. A couple of other bloggers have this on their horizons right now, so I am waiting with interest to see what the various reviews come in like.

I am so sad that you are thinking of dropping this great meme, let alone your entire blog, but I guess that if your heart just isn't in it any more, then there is no point.

Have you lost interest in reading in general, or is it the fact that you have to sit and physically post reviews of the books you read that is the problem?

Please don't disappear without saying goodbye to us all, will you?

    Have a good weekend,

    Yvonne

    1. Hi Yvonne,

I'm not planning to totally disappear, I've just become tired of the time-consuming nature of blogging. Plus after writing 172 reviews here, I feel like I'm starting to run out of things to say about books I like. I'm not sure what that will mean for this blog, but I'll let everyone know when I decide what to do. I still have a bunch of reviews that need to be posted (because I promised to do so) and after that I'll be in a better position to make a decision.

I'm hoping I can find someone to take over Book Beginnings who will be better about getting the link-up posted on time and who will be better about visiting everyone than I have been lately. :)

  3. The opening lines certainly captured my attention.
Sorry to hear you are thinking about dropping this meme. If I did not already have so much going on I would be tempted.

  7. Katy:

I'm sorry to hear that you're losing your blogging momentum. Hopefully a bit of a change up or maybe a short break will help you out.

I've really enjoyed participating in the meme....I wish this year hadn't started out so crazy, or I'd be ready to offer to take it.

    And...on your beginning....you're right, it's very intriguing.

    1. Thanks Pam. I've got a few different people interested so I'm going to take a look at their blogs, etc. and I'll try to make a decision in the next day or so.
